Bumthang Sightseeing

Bumthang is a district located in the central part of Bhutan, and it is considered the cultural and religious heartland of the country. The district is known for its natural beauty, historic sites, and religious festivals. Here are some of the top sightseeing attractions in Bumthang:

  1. Jambay Lhakhang: This ancient temple is one of the 108 temples built by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century. It is located in a picturesque valley and is known for its intricate carvings and beautiful frescoes.

  2. Kurjey Lhakhang: This sacred temple complex is located on a hill overlooking the Chamkhar Chhu river and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Bhutan. It is believed to be the resting place of the body of Guru Rinpoche, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan.

  3. Tamshing Lhakhang: This historic temple is located on the opposite side of the river from Kurjey Lhakhang and is known for its unique murals and frescoes depicting the life of Guru Rinpoche.

It is said that Guru Rinpoche discovered hidden treasures at the bottom of the lake, which are believed to have been hidden by a local demon.

Mebar Tsho
The Burning Lake, Mebar Tsho is located along the way to the Tang village over the feeder road under Bumthang valley. Mebar Tsho is considered one of the most sacred sites in the region as it is related to the renowned religious treasurer (Terton) Terton Pema Lingpa. Pema Lingpa is considered an incarnated disciple of Padmasambhava who discovered treasure within the lake in late 15th century.
Jakar Dzong
The little one-street town with many restaurants and handicraft stores stays busy with the tourists and local people also.
Jambey Lhakhang
One of the Bhutan’s oldest and most venerated temples, Jambey Lhakhang is wrapped with history and scenic beauty, is a must visit place in Bumthang.
